Our Approach

With HeartMath® Certified Mentors in the Building Personal Resilience™ program and HeartMath® Practitioners with clinical backgrounds, we work with school aged children to establish a new baseline for sustained behavioral change through heart coherence. Heart coherence is the state where heart rhythms help synchronize the activity in the brain. This synchronization is where the heart, mind, and emotions function efficiently and in sync.
The techniques and biometric technology help students learn to increase emotional regulation and resilience by practicing heart coherence techniques. Students are connected to biometric technology with an ear clip sensor. The technology monitors and displays individual heart rhythms, indicating incoherent or coherent heart rhythm patterns, giving direct feedback, and tracking progress over time. As the techniques are practiced with fidelity, students learn to quickly shift their heart rhythm patterns from an incoherent state to a coherent state by self-managing their thoughts and emotions.

Practicing the techniques, students learn to independently reduce depleting emotions and experience renewing emotions, enhancing their ability to maintain composure, think clearly, improve impulse control, academics, attitudes, behaviors, and much more! This approach benefits all students, especially those who receive special services.
See Figure 1 of an in-the-moment heart rhythm shift. When heart rhythm patterns are jagged (incoherent), unclear messages are sent to the brain turning on the reactive brain, making it difficult to self-regulate and effectively handle situations. When heart rhythm patterns are smooth and ordered (coherent), clear messages are sent to the brain turning on the thinking brain, enhancing students’ optimal performance.
